Download a whole Reddit thread, hidden replies included
Updated October 10, 2026
Reddit has no download button for threads, and the usual workarounds miss comments. Save only bookmarks the post, printing to PDF captures only the replies already on screen, the .json trick stopped working for logged-out visitors in 2026, and the Wayback Machine no longer archives Reddit threads. To download a Reddit thread with the replies hidden behind those links, you need something that opens them first, and that tells you which ones Reddit wouldn't return. In 2026 that means a browser extension running in your logged-in session.
Why a saved Reddit thread is missing comments
A big thread never shows all its comments at once. Reddit hides them in several ways:
- "Load more comments" and "continue this thread". Reddit shows the most relevant replies first and replaces the rest with these links. Its API returns hidden replies at most 100 at a time, one request after another.
- Collapsed comments. Communities can collapse deleted and removed comments automatically. Crowd Control collapses comments from new accounts, non-members or people with negative karma in that community, depending on the setting. Reddit also collapses comments it thinks are spam or low quality (Reddit Help, "Crowd Control" and "Potential Spam", edited 2026).
- Sort order. Each community suggests a default sort (Best, Top, New, Old, Q&A or Controversial), which decides what's on the first screen.
Anything that captures "what's on the page" gets the first screen and nothing behind those links. That's why a downloaded thread so often has a few hundred comments when Reddit says it has two thousand.
Ways to download a Reddit thread, compared
| Method | Gets collapsed replies | Output | Works in 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit's Save button | No, it's a bookmark | Nothing to download | Yes, but it only adds the post to your Saved tab |
| Print to PDF in your browser | Only replies you expanded by hand first | Yes | |
| Reddit data request (settings → data request) | No, it covers only your own account's posts, comments and votes | CSV files | Yes, can take up to 30 days |
Adding .json to the URL |
Partly | JSON | Not logged out: returns 403 since Reddit's 2026-05-28 change |
| Wayback Machine | No | Archived page | No, Reddit limited it to the homepage in August 2025 (The Verge) |
| archive.today | Unclear | Archived page | Wikipedia deprecated it in March 2026 over reliability problems |
| PDF and Markdown converter extensions | Some click "load more" for you | PDF or Markdown | Varies; check the listing |
| Comment Scraper (ours) | Yes, it opens them for you | CSV, JSON, Markdown | Yes, while you're logged in |
A few converters we looked at on 2026-10-10, by their public listings: ThreadIT makes PDFs only and is free. Reddit to PDF Saver clicks "load more comments" for you, and its free version adds a watermark. Web2MD converts threads to Markdown with 3 free conversions a day. Reddinbox's free tool exports PDF, text, Markdown or JSON, 5 a day, text only. Several older tools work by adding .json to the URL and are likely broken since May 2026.
How to download a Reddit thread with Comment Scraper
- Install the extension and sign in to Reddit in the same browser.
- Open the thread and click the Comment Scraper icon to open the side panel.
- Click Export thread. It opens "load more comments" and "continue this thread" for you, one request every 1.5 seconds, and shows how many comments it has as it goes.
- When it finishes, check the three numbers: comments fetched, comments it knows it couldn't get, and the count Reddit shows. Reddit's count includes deleted and removed comments, so the first number is often lower.
- Pick a format and click Download.
Single-thread exports up to 1,000 comments are free and don't need an account. The Personal plan raises that to 5,000 comments per thread. A thread with a few thousand comments can take 15 to 30 minutes, because Reddit allows each account about 100 requests every 10 minutes.
Download a Reddit thread to PDF
There's no direct "export Reddit post as PDF" button in our extension, but getting a PDF that includes the hidden replies takes one extra step:
- Export the thread as Markdown.
- Open the file in a Markdown app such as Typora ($14.99 once, according to its site) and choose Export → PDF. Or, if you use the command line, run
pandoc thread.md -o thread.pdf(Pandoc needs a PDF engine installed).
Each comment comes out with its number, score, age and which comment it replies to, so the PDF still reads as a conversation. If you only need the first screen of a short thread, your browser's Print → Save as PDF is quicker, as long as you expand the replies you care about first.
Download a Reddit thread to CSV or JSON
For analysis, CSV and JSON are better than PDF, and this is where a Reddit thread exporter earns its keep over a screenshot or printout.
- CSV opens cleanly in Excel and Google Sheets, one row per comment, with score, time, depth, parent and a link to each comment.
- JSON comes in two shapes: one row per comment, or replies nested under their parent.
- Markdown numbers every comment like
[c12]for Claude or ChatGPT. Our guide to putting a Reddit thread into Claude shows that workflow.
Exports leave out author names. In CSV and JSON every comment keeps its permalink, so you can go back to the original. Markdown keeps the thread's link at the top and gives each comment a number like [c12] instead, which is what you cite when you work with it in Claude.
Choosing a Reddit thread downloader extension
Whatever you install, check these before you rely on it:
- Does it open hidden replies? Compare its comment count with the number Reddit shows on the thread.
- Does it tell you what it couldn't get? Some comments are deleted or removed and can't be fetched. A good tool says so instead of calling the export "complete".
- Does it keep the conversation? You want each reply's parent, its score and its time, not one flat list.
- Where does your data go? Ours keeps exports in your browser for 30 days. Others store them on their servers.
- How hard does it hit Reddit? Requests go out under your account, so a tool that fires them quickly puts the account at risk.
Downloading a thread is also covered by Reddit's terms, which don't make exceptions for personal copies. Our page on whether it's legal to scrape Reddit explains where that leaves you.
Questions
Does Reddit have a download button for threads? No. Save adds the post to your profile's Saved tab, and the data request only covers your own account's activity. We found no Reddit help article about exporting a thread.
How do I export a Reddit post as a PDF with all the comments? Expand the replies first, or export the thread as Markdown with an extension that opens them for you, then convert the Markdown to PDF in a Markdown app or with Pandoc.
Why does my download have fewer comments than Reddit shows? Reddit's count includes deleted, removed and filtered comments, and most download methods skip everything behind "load more comments". An export that reports what it couldn't fetch lets you see the gap.
Can I download a Reddit thread without logging in?
Not reliably. Logged-out .json requests return 403 and old Reddit requires a login since mid-2026. Printing the page works logged out, but only for what's on screen.
Is there a free Reddit thread downloader? Yes. Comment Scraper exports threads up to 1,000 comments for free, and several converter extensions have free tiers with daily limits.
